Owen, I used to say to applicants, "I have no idea whether there is a job at the end of this rainbow, but if you can live on meager salary we pay you, it is a chance to do what university professors do for 4 or 5 years. Make sure you enjoy it while you are doing it, because the pleasure of doing it may be the only reward you get." And still they came. Mostly they had a good time, I think, and some of them have jobs!
