You can also get back the classic/legacy gmail by using IE 8 or firefox 4 - both of wich are slighly faster for general websurfing compared to the most recent/modern versions. That being said what else is out there for webmail? Gmail has some relatively good street-cred. Wich is hard to compete with when saying to someone: oh send me mail to my skydrive acount-for example.
