Compiled with sbcl  1.0.30 on 32-bit Debian 5.0.

But I do have some significant local changes. However I did not expect
it to cause this sort of behavior (famous last words ... :-)

Interesting. I guess I may have done more damage than I thought!  I'll
revert changes and take another more careful look.
