Mining Association of Canada weighs in on Northern Gateway pipeline 2:08am Kim Smith 11/19/2011 The President and CEO of the Mining Association of Canada is urging governments to move forward with the Northern Gateway pipeline. In particular, Pierre Gratton says federal and provincial governments need to resolve land claims with First Nations. "They need to find better ways to work with First Nations to provide industry with greater certainty on the land base." That being said, Gratton thinks oil companies can pursue economic agreements with First Nations without having land claims dealt with first. It's reported that the $5.5-billion Enbridge pipeline is opposed by at least 50 First Nations along the proposed route. The Northern Gateway would ship oil underground from Bruderheim, near Edmonton, to Kitimat, BC. (sj, ks, ph)
