IMHO I think that vi(m) is good for text editing, but I could add some more as joe, emacs, nano, MC, etc. All of them are simple (well, perhaps not emacs xD ) and for "simple" text editing could be good. Nowdaways all text editors have a GUI interface to work with so I don't think it could be a barrier to not to include them in base. In the other hand, we want a simple text editor in base, not a big-monster-text editor (the user can install it later, if needed). I hope my opinion will be clear enought to you.
