Yes...the emerge for octave-2.1.5.7-r1 gives that instruction...but also says having f2c and/or ifc will work...I have both of those and it still wouldn't work... I was just checking if someone happen to have run into this before... I guess I'll just re-emerge gcc and try again...

Yeah, that fixed it...it installed fine with the +f77 gcc.
