I'll leave most of this to the Debian experts. You shouldn't need a kernel recompile just for a distro upgrade, unless the distro requires a newer kernel which isn't the case with Woody->Sarge. Of course, a new computer usually means a new kernel. > The reason I ask is because I want to install the latest release of > Debian (which, I take it, is Sarge) on the new server, and it seems > like the easiest thing to do is to install Sarge on the new machine > and then rsync it up with the old server. > > But I'd be hesitant to do > that, for fear of breaking some functionality on the new machine, if > what I currently have running on the old machine is some strange > hybrid of Woody and Sarge. I would tar the old Moodle directory and then untar to the new one. I suppose you could use rsync instead, though I don't see the point. And then transfer over the MySQL or PostgreSQL database. > Am I correct in assuming that the easiest way to undertake the server > migration is to install Sarge on the new machine and then use rsync > to update the new computer with all the relevant data from the old > one (assuming, of course, that the distro on the current Moodle > server isn't some strange hybrid)?
