I'll leave most of this to the Debian experts. You shouldn't need a
kernel recompile just for a distro upgrade, unless the distro requires
a newer kernel which isn't the case with Woody->Sarge.

Of course, a new computer usually means a new kernel.

I would tar the old Moodle directory and then untar to the new one. I
suppose you could use rsync instead, though I don't see the point. And
then transfer over the MySQL or PostgreSQL database.
