While I agree completely with you guys (and have sent my thoughts),
one thing (as a group) that we might be interested in supporting is
'open-source' music.

The Creative Commons Licenses make it possible for an artist to
release music (or other media) and retain copyright. In the case of
the CC Attribution License, derivative works are even allowed.

One great example I know of is Jonathan Coulton. His music is funny,
witty, and often geeky. He has written songs about Zombies, mad
scientists, fractals, Ikea, and crazed baseball comissioners. And,
since he uses the CC Attribution license, other have made
derivativeworks based on music, including funny World of Warcraft
inspired music videos.

His music is available for sale and for free on his website
(http://www.jonathancoulton.com/). He is trying to make a living
using the open-source model as an artist. If you are interested (and
I think you all really ought to be), you should check out the
following songs by Coulton:

- Code Monkey
- Skull Crusher Mountain
- Ikea
- Kennesaw Mountain Landis
- Re: Your Brains

At any rate, my point is that supporting artists that make a conscious
effort to not gouge or otherwise make their customers lives harder is
a good thing. Hopefully, someday the RIAA and other industry groups
might take notice.

Sorry about the rant, just love Coulton's stuff and thoughtyou guys would too.
