Another data point: I just finished the upgrade, and everything appears to be working fine on my machine. While I'd like to think it's because of good moral character, it's probably just luck of the draw. To follow up something Don said about dist-upgrade, the "official" advice concerning upgrading Ubuntu seems to be to use the graphical Update Manager rather than dist-upgrade directly. I don't know what the difference is, but that's the method that worked fine for me.
