Google Summer of Code 2008 was just announced at
http://code.google.com/soc/ . The summary of the program is that you
can get a $4500 stipend (honestly only ~$4300 after April 15, 2009 so
be ready for that) for coding a open source project over the summer.
I've done it for the past two summers and its a rather relaxed but
productive way to spend a summer.

They still haven't gotten the list of supported projects finalized,
but you can expect the big projects from the previous years will still
be in it. It's not too early to start thinking about it, since the
sure-fire way to get accepted is to get involved with an open source
project now. Google picks the projects they support, but its the
projects that actually pick the students.

You can drop me an email if you want to get involved with Amarok or
KDE this year. I'll be one of the mentors, I could help you get
involved. Last year Amarok didn't have many proposals, I want to fix
that this time.

Note that if you code for KDE its pretty likely that KDE e.V. will pay
for 80% of your trip to the aKademy conference in Belgium in August.
And if you work for Amarok, we'll likely pick up the 20% and your
meals. :) This isn't really an advertised benefit, but its how it's
worked in past years.

Ian
