Patrick,
I'd recommend you to try TestDisk, which is a very powerful software,
which comes with Parted Magic ( http://partedmagic.com/ ). It never
ever disappointed me (PhotoRec is its cousin -- I haven't try to use
PhotoRec on a HDD, but it worked for me on a 2GB memory card).
In case you're unsuccessful with it, mail me privately for GetDataBack
NTFS. I haven't tried it for a long time because I already had
TestDisk, but before I discovered TestDisk GetDataBack did the work
for me.

So. Long story short, I managed to break my primary windows hard
drive's partition tables and render most of the data on it
inaccessible. The problem is, there are some rather important
documents and irreplaceable photographs on the drive that I haven't
backed up yet, and I need help in recovering that data. I'm
currently running Ubuntu off a spare HD so no worries about
installing software and overwriting data on the original drive.
Here are my questions:
(1) Are there any F/OS linux utilities that I can use to recover
data off the drive? It's an ntfs-3g drive. A utility that can repair
partition tables may also work, but I don't understand how partition
tables work so I don't know if this is possible.
(2) If nobody is aware of an open source alternative - Has anyone
currently in Kirksville previously purchased commercial data
recovery software that I can borrow for a weekend? It can be linux/
windows.
(3) In the case that the first two are not feasible, does anyone
have any reccomendations for commercial data recovery software?
Thanks for the help,
