Sean gave an excellent post I think. My sense is similar to his. More projects use MySQL, but in some ways PostgreSQL has been a more mature product for a long time. I've used MySQL in my own projects, but mostly that has been because I learned it first and I've not needed all of the features that a "real" SQL would have. I would just as happily use PostgreSQL in future products.
