I have a SheevaPlug
(http://www.globalscaletechnologies.com/p-22-sheevaplug-dev-kit-us.aspx)
to use as a server at home and as it uses Debian I can easily do a Samba
and sshd and nfs installation to it, so archiving and moving files between
computers is not so hard now.

One big plus of having a 'server' instead of an external hdd is that
you don't have to have something physically attached to your computer
to do backups and you can access your data everywhere.

There are tons of ways to mount the shares as you login so it works as
if you're dealing with your local files.
As it's a mounted location, anything that makes sense to you can be
used to do back-up. cp. rsync. drag-n-drop.

If you want an automated folder sync/backup you can have a look at this
thread: http://ask.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/11/19/2059221 - one
guy suggested Unison and I think that's a great idea.

Currently, I have 16Gigs of my pictures stored on my server and it's still
working... fine. I have folder named yymmdd for my pictures so
I just do a fish:// to my server and drag-n-drop because it would take 1
sec for me to realize what's my last back-up date.

Hope it helps,
- H.
