Hello all!
I am new to this list so forgive me if I am out-of-order here.
If any of you are down in the St. Louis area during summer, there are
a few LUGs down here. One of them is meeting TONITE!
Sorry for the short notice.
Everyone is welcome. There are no dues. General Q&A before and
after the "featured" topic followed by an unofficial trip for pizza
afterwards.
The location is literally off the edge of Lambert Airport property.
Address, etc. below as well as some comments on this evening from our
DISCUSS mailing-list.

consider the age of video chips in these machines. the new OS(s)
desktops are mostly 3d ...many old cards may not support the 3d gui 's
be careful what we promise.
One of my machines video cards is a (rather new) bottom of the line
state of the art 'professional workstation' 3d graphics card;
the most recent release of 3d video drivers 'linux proprietary'
will not support my card...the open source 3d drivers...who knows
how long.
Open Source Mesa Gallium3d does support my card 'currently' albeit
slow...very reasonable speeds for desktop standards.
OpenCL code is the backend for OpenGL functionality, my
professional card is/will no longer be supported with 'linux
proprietary' 3d
i.e because I have the proprietary driver installed, as instructed
by OpenCL sdk kit, I cannot perform many functions the card is
capable of, regarding gpu programming?
If, IF, I have time I will see if the OpenCL sdk will work with Open
Source Mesa Gallium3d
new OS(s) desktops may not allow support for the old hardware even
with open source drivers (just not enough horse power)?
the newer 3d chips set are coming down in price & the device driver
developers will not make the effort for 3d support on older hardware
when it comes to linux.
open source may always be a step child in this area.
