There's some lifecycle analysis studies of hardware produced by academics, but they're few and far between. I've got one on file somewhere comparing LCD to CRT monitors. Guess what? LCD monitors might use less energy in use but if they the same size or larger than the CRT they use more energy in manufacture (conversely the CRT uses less energy in manufacture but more energy in use). I actually couldn't care if recycled is better than new -- me and most of the people I do community Linux projects for can't afford new!!
