Yes, sounds like a good way forward. If there is anything that you feel would be generally useful, you are of course welcome to donate it back to the project.
You mention JMX; that would imply mainly monitoring features, wouldn't it?
It would also imply making runtime configuration, but probably not persistent configuration changes.
