I don't think you can ever get away without using a preloader, can you?

You can make sure the embedded clip that starts partway through the main one 
was actually constructed 
within the main swf (i.e. it is a movie clip symbol), and is not an external 
swf.  The reason for this, I have 
found, is that the external swf won't start downloading until it is called from 
the main timeline, but if it is 
just an instance of a movie clip symbol, it will load from the very beginning 
as part of the main timeline 
and you shouldn't have any breaks playback.
