Contributed by on Saturday, March 15 @ 16:52:36 PST

March 6, 2003 - The Swedish Space Corporation (SSC) and Alvarion today announced that
they have entered the record books with the transmission of information via a
broadband wireless link over a distance of 310km. Guinness World Records have
officially recognized this as the longest distance achieved using Wi-Fi wireless
connectivity.

The link was made in the end of 2002 between a stratospheric balloon 18 miles up that
was launched from Esrange near the town of Kiruna in northern Sweden and a base
station located near Esrange.

Onboard the balloon was a BreezeNET DS.11 802.11b outdoor bridge unit, supplied by
Alvarion, the world’s most successful provider of broadband wireless products. Data,
such as environmental conditions, images, and weather patterns, was collected and the
information was sent back to Esrange via the Alvarion BreezeNET DS.11 unit, connected
to a 2.4 meters dish antenna. The antenna was controlled by automatic tracking system
using GPS (Global Positioning System) technology.
