What services do the remote workers need to access? If there's anyway to provide that service with an internet-safe protocal (e.g. HTTPS/IMAPS/SSH/SFTP) it's usually far better to go that route as you save a fortune, avoid multiple classes of security risk and you can train your users in a single way no matter where they're working.
