On August 22,2002 the St. Croix Estuary Project, Inc (SCEP) and the Maine State Planning Office (MSPO)  jointly announced their up-coming International St. Croix Estuary Stewards Course to be held this fall in  September and October. This free course is open to residents of Charlotte and Washington Counties and is designed for those who have an interest in working with local organizations to maintain, protect, and restore the  St. Croix Estuary environment.

SCEP, a local non-profit environmental organization, will be organizing and managing the stewards course as part of their "River Revival 2002", an initiative that is designed to identify and remove some of the remaining sources of negative impact on the estuary. The International Stewards Training Course will bring interested   individuals together, provide various levels of training, and motivate participants to actively work on remediation projects.

Funding and guidance for the Stewards course is being provided under the Maine Coastal Program (MCP) of  the Maine State Planning Office. Senior Planner Theresa Torrent-Ellis is the contact person for this initiative.

There is clearly a shared obligation of stewardship on the St. Croix were resources need be protected and conserved while allowing residents to survive and grow economically. We believe that that balance will be achieved through this Joint International Steward Training Course being held this fall in the communities along the St. Croix Estuary.

The Course will be held in various local facilities during the period September 24th to October 24th. Two days each week will be devoted to field trips and course presentations which will cover various aspects of the EstuarY and Stewardship. The program will begin with a tour of the Estuary on board a local charter vessel and subsequent sessions will include cultural history, geology, the plants and animals, the state of the estuary, current impacts, remediation objectives, local organizations, environmental monitoring methods, working with government and industry, and other topics. Classroom and field excursions will be led by a variety of well-known and qualified individuals. Several social events are planned and it is anticipated that participants will not only learn a great deal about their area, but that they will have an enjoyable experience as well.

Individuals who are interested in the Stewards Course and the River Revival 2002 program are encouraged to
register early since enrollment is limited. For more information and the course schedule, contact the St. Croix  Estuary Project, Inc. 49 King Street, St. Stephen, N.B.
