And compilers.  As far as I know, there were only four HA machines ever built, 
and that was before high level languages existed.

Not certain about that.  I don't think anything in HA would prevent 
interactivity, 
but certainly nothing input would be submitted to the program store, and 
therefore 
could nto be executed.
