But he didn't resign from _being a soldier_ because of his "immorality". He resigned from being director of the CIA for an act of "poor judgment" of exactly the kind that would get most of those under his command (at least the ones with any kind of access to classified information) fired, or, depending on the outcome, worse. The FBI is apparently already looking into the issue of whether the outcome of his poor judgments might result in something worse for him, but as director, the moment the existence of such an investigation became more widely known, he would pretty much have to resign.
