Agree with your diagnosis. Facebook, which has engaged in massive spamming since nearly the day it was founded, simply doesn't care about abuse that it heaps on the entire rest of the Internet. The only way I've found to deflect it is to firewall out their address ranges -- which, unfortunately, means doing sporadic updates whenever they add new ones, dang it.
