This is def OT but while we're on the subject i have a multitude of emails
from a number of lists which i keep for reference, i know there is an online
archive for some of them, but is there any way to actually save my emails?

Subject: RE: How to save this list (is this OT?)
Guys,
I have to say that using prefixes such as SOT, OT and WOT are as much use as
a chocolate fireguard!
OT is a highly subjective state. What is _on_ topic for one person is WOT
for another. For instance (as Nat points out), some may consider this
particular thread as being OT because it is not specifically related to
using the fusebox methodology, but others may consider it to be on topic
because it is related to how we receive assistance in developing Fusebox
applications and the maintenance of a usable service.
With subject prefixes you have to come up with a standard set of prefixes
and make sure that they are publicly and widely available. Even then, a lot
of people when they start their thread as doing so in the 'heat of the
moment' and invariably will forget to put an appropriate prefix onto the
subject or none of the prefixes fit their percieved subject matter. So
again, prefixes, about as much use as a chocolate fireguard!
The only way to try and reduce or control traffic to the list is to split it
into multiple lists, but here again we get stuck... How and what are the
devisions in the group? Using fusebox and developing the methodology go
hand in hand, so you couldn't really split the list into a 'help' list and
a methodology dev list. After that I have to say I'm pretty stuck as to how
else you could split the list. Its not like there are admin or server
issues with fusebox, cos there is no server to administer (obviously the CF
Server needs administering, but that doesn't fit into the remit of fusebox
as a developement methodology).
Probably one of the best solutions would be a news server linked to the
mailing list that is well advertised, so that more people sign up to the
news server than the list, so that they can read/post to the list at their
leisure rather than force feed n emails a day.
I've been signed up to the fusebox and cf-talk lists for a frighteningly
long time now with various email addresses, but I still have every single
(well almost) email that has gone to either of those lists. Including all
the other mailing lists that I'm signed up to, I get in the region of 500
emails a day! Mark all Read is one of my favourite commands. I hardly ever
read the lists theses days, just scan for interesting subject headers like
this one and Steve's one of Flash and Fusebox. If I have a question then I
search my email folders first, then post the question. I wish I had more
time to help out people and answer emails, but I think I write on average
5-10 emails a day, but I can write up to 20-25 emails on a busy day, so I
don't always get the opportunity to reply to as many questions as I'd like
to.
Anyway, what was my point.... Oh yes... You have to adapt to the volume of
traffic on the list, you can't possibly read every email. Wish I could get
a job reading and replying to emails all day though... ;o>
At the end of all that, I think what I'm trying to say is that prefixes
aren't going to help save the list. There needs to be more ways to access
this list. I think that is the way to make the list more useable as the
traffic increases.
Regards
Stephen
