You can pass and set variables in Flash using ActionScript.
My understanding is Flash 5 now supports multi-dimensional
arrays which could be very handy. I can suggest a great
Flash tutorial site for all skill levels:

a URL variable to a HTML/CFM file with an embedded swf
file and have that variable accesable by flash? That
