You can absolutely continue with the session control as you wish, it is
still coldfusion.  The only difference would be a slight change to the flow.

Basically you will probably end up with your root fbx_settings containing
most of the stuff in your application.cfm

as far as where you check, and forward the user, that is up to you, I would
also put this in my root fbx_settings (because it will need to be after my
cfapplication tag, which is in my fbx_settings.)

As to "is there a better way?"  You might consider client variables stored
in a database, but that is entirely up to you, and your applications needs.
