The reverse look-ups are used to implement the Nested Layouts.  You shouldn't have to worry about them yourself, but they have a job to do behind the scenes.

As a new Fuseboxer (and loving every minute of it), your arguments against
these "features" are well put.  Looking at the core code, I was wondering
what good all that reverse lookup code was and why I would ever need to use
it.
