I am reading your question again, and I am not sure where you are going with it. Another answer or piece of information that might be useful is that you can use conditional logic (if..then..else) in your fbx_layouts file and check against fusebox.thisCircuit to tell which circuit is being called. I believe this is shown in the original nested layouts example, but this allows you to set a parents layout to be different depending on which child is called - i.e. if child A is called, then parent is red, but if child B is called, then parent is blue.
