Not saying that this is the *best* way, but it's *my* way... :-) I set to variables - self and sslSelf - one pointing to HTTP and one pointing to HTTPS.
Then, based on the server_port, I assign the value of the base href variable to be either HTTP or HTTPS as necessary. I just reference self and sslSelf wherever I need to move back and forth. Since my base href is set by the baseHref variable, it switches gracefully.
