I umm well. Sh*t MX released today, and I am trying to finish the damned MM
XML Feed thing I am working on or I would really love to debate this topic.
BTW I am totally against it at first glance. Reeks of socialism.

Subject: Paid Community Development Anyone?

I've been tossing around an idea in my head for the past month, and I
now think I've worked out enough of the details that I'd like to propose
it here for consideration from the Fusebox community. I call it
"Community Development". It's a mixture of Steve Nelson's idea on
"secret agents" and open-source development philosophy. (As such, Steve,
I am very interested if you would be interested in the enterprise, and
your general input on the idea.)

It arose because I've noticed myself, and other people, duplicating a
lot of work building smaller, customized applications because purchasing
commercial products were not worth the cost. There was also no way to
ensure that said company would be around in the future to support the
product, or expand its features to meet my growing needs. I love the
virtues of community development, with the ability to modify code and
submit it to a standard body for incorporation into the mainstream
product. At the same time, I think people need to receive restitution
for their hard work. Also, if a big company with a big budget installs
20 copies of a product, they should pay more than a small company with a
small budget who only installs one copy. So, I put together a model
based on the ideas of dividends and community ownership (like an
employee-owned company, but no employees). I'd like to find out who
would be interested in such a model.

I wrote up full information on the FuseWiki because it would have been
an even longer post:
http://www.meta-magic.com/cgi-bin/fusewiki?CommunityDevelopmentModel

If you have trouble accessing the Wiki, let me know and I'll send you
the details.

The quick overview is that it involves open-source-like development of
code for generic commercial applications. Payment for services is by
flat-fee or percentage of the net profit, and trade-ins on work can be
made for no-cost downloads of code. Developers can make additional
income consulting to help companies customize the applications. And
everything could operate under the umbrella of a non-profit organization
to ensure fairness of treatment, with profits potentially donated to the
Fusebox Government to help handle their expenses, or to other charities.

So, what do people think about forming such an organization?
