uh, ever heard of NAFTA ? (in particular the "free trade" portion?) What
about the elderly that sign-up for those cross-border drug runs? They go to
a border-town doctor who is licensed in both countries and then take a short
bus ride to Canada to buy the drugs cheaper and then come back. It's tricky:
you cannot *mail* the drugs across the border but physically crossing the
border and them coming back with them is totally legit.

As for Adalon, yes I think you have an issue if a friend buys a copy in
Canada and then mails it to you (though obviously there are easy ways not to
have to pay the duty), but if you take your laptop and go to Canada and buy
the software and install it there on your laptop then it's a lot "fuzzier"
what it means (and NAFTA just makes it that much fuzzier).

Also don't forget that if YOU (the american) go to Canada to buy the
software you'll pay approx 17.5% VAT tax, which you can recover when you
come back to the States. You'll mail off a form to the appropriate Canadian
authority along with proof of having returned to the USA and then get moeny
back (or you can stop at one of the refund centers at a border crossing).
But if your Canadian buys Adalon for you and sends it on to you, how are you
going to show you were in Canada and returned with the product.

Canada is just dirt cheap right now for Americans to visit. Take a trip to
our very nice neighbor to the North and buy to your hearts content. Do
consider flying to a near border town (examples: Seattle or Buffalo or
Detroit) and then driving over the border. You'll be asked a lot fewer
questions upon your return and pay a lot less duty than if you fly. Just
don't come back with tens of thousands of dollars of obvious goods and
you'll be fine. But Canada is a great place to go to buy a new laptop and
other small hi-price items that can seem to have already been yours when you
first entered the country :)
