This is kind of vague, could you give a bit better description?

I am not really sure what you mean by "user", is it someone who is
putting the data into the database? Or the operator that is building
the variable template?

From what you wrote here, it sounds like you need to test the FIRST
field, and if that field is empty, then you would return the value of
the second field, else you return the first... I guess it would be
something like this...


if (FIELD("First") != "") {
   return FIELD("First");
} else {
   return FIELD("Second");
}

This might be a little more simplistic than you need, but given the
lightweight description you gave, I would need more info about exactly
what you want.
