No, competition is not necessary in the economic structure.
Competition is an enormous waste of human and material
resources.
The USSR et al economy stagnated because of the lack of
democracy, not because of the lack of competition.

My one-time father-in-law, a utopian socialist born in 19th Century England
could not understand why it was that two hockey teams competed for a single
puck.  His solution: give them both a puck and then they wouldn't have to
