Established in 1992 by Unity Trust Bank, which provides banking services to the third sector, the UK Social Economy Forum is supported by the different families representing the sector (UKCC, BUPA, UKSIF, NCVO and CAF) The role that the Social Economy has to play in the Stakeholder Society will form the theme of the Fifth National Forum on 21 January 1998. It will bring together a wide range of policy makers and practitioners to look in particular at the creation of new jobs and reducing unemployment. To strengthen the work of the national forum, seminars have also been organised. Boom or bust? - the economics of the social economy, the title of the first seminar will take place on 15th December 1997 and will examine the contribution the social economy organisations currently makes to the economy and is likely to make in the future. The second seminar entitled Social Entrepreneurs - a new action programme on 28th April 1998 will hear from social entrepreneurs themselves with ideas on how a new action programme can be developed for the sector. The third seminar The UK Social Economy - a European Agenda on 1st July follows on from the 6th European Conference (Birmingham, 3-5 June 1998) and will provide the opportunity for organisations to reflect on the outcomes and take forward their work on Europe and how the UK social economy represents itself within Europe.
