Subject: California GOP Governor Pete Wilson abolishing affirmative actio

California GOP Governor Pete Wilson yesterday issued an executive
order abolishing affirmative action programs for California state
contracts and ended all programs that promote opportunities for women
and minority business owners to obtain state contracts. Meanwhile, a
coalition of conservative groups, including the Institute for Justice
and the American Civil Rights Institute, sent a letter to all 50 state
attorneys general yesterday, urging them to examine state and local
policies and do away with affirmative action programs.
African-American legislators were outraged that the coalition was
adopting the language of the civil rights movement from the 1960s in
its campaign against affirmative action. Rep. Danny K. Davis (D-IL)
said, "...It's Robin Hood in reverse .... They are trying to make
people who are disadvantaged more disadvantaged." [Washington Times,
