Earlier today at a morning press conference, Tony Blair said again that Saddam had WMDs and that's why the UK had gone to war. He had the evidence, and the people of Britain must believe him and be patient because the evidence will be published in due course.
This evening, while Blair remained in Evian for the big G8 jamboree tomorrow, the spin doctors at Downing Street, realised that Blair was giving himself too much rope and was in danger of hanging himself. Before Blair ends his political career at the next press conference, they have just issued a statement saying that WMDs 'may never be found' -- not even a single one.
We know this Saddam Hussein guy was a really bad guy. He gassed his own people (not really -- they were Kurds...). He killed and tortured thousands. All this seems well established, and well establishes him as an evil person.
But the worst thing about Saddam Hussein, it is now looking like, is that he disposed of all his illegal weapons before the "coalition" could get its hands on them, so that George W Bush couldn't prove his case for the war.
Instead of George W Bush being able to hand his father Saddam's severed head on a plate, Bush is finding himself holding his own head in his hands, and, like the tar baby it is, not being able to get rid of it. It wasn't supposed to happen this way. Bush is the good guy, so he should *look* good --> not like he lied to get the congress to let him have the war he wanted no matter what the facts were.
Bush therefore resorts to his tried and true way of getting out of a bad situation: He flatly asserts that things are the way they are supposed to be: We have found Saddam's illegal weapons: those two truck trailers -- they *are* the proof. We were right and we have proved it. (smile) (applause) Thank you all for coming. That's enough for today."
