Ed,

I don't things are going swimmingly, either. However, in the areas through which Steyn drove, people seem to have picked things up and are returning to some kind of normalcy. Is this an indication that outside the cities people are getting along?

In the cities, there are without doubt bunches of Baath angry that they have lost their special status and private perks. They'll be trouble - rather like the Mafia are elsewhere.

In fact, I suppose the Baghdad casualties are on all fours with the casualties in South-East Los Angeles - by no means the worst of the inner city battlefields. A couple of months ago, 17 were killed (all innocents) in about 6 days.

The Brit casualties of a few days ago came during an operation to get rid of civilian held guns. That might be a serious mistake.

An American bumper-sticker says it succinctly:

"If you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns."

So, perhaps we should stop doing what seems proper to the Brits, but may not be appropriate for the Iraqis.

Harry, I tend to agree with Keith. I don't think things are going
swimmingly at all. The occupying powers are in deep trouble.
