Further to my earlier posting regarding the mother who had to go from East Sussex to Manchester in order to have her baby delivered in a National Health Service hospital (which was a son, not a daughter as I reported), the principal Premature Baby charity has been on the line to Radio 4 to say that hundreds of such cases are occurring every year.

One recent case was of a mother from East Anglia who had to go to Glasgow in Scotland in order to find a bed in a NHS hospital. I'm only guessing, but that's a trip of about 350 miles -- consequently, a 700 mile round-trip for the parents to see their baby in the following weeks.

Britains' pre- and post-natal fatality rate is the worst in western Europe. (According to the above charity.)
