I'm not getting anti-aliased fonts (I am in, for instance, Mozilla

AFAIK anti-aliasing fonts in applications is not related to WM

I was merely saying that anti-aliasing works in the applications to provide the information that _some_ anti-aliasing work on my computer.

But not in my favourite window manager application, "fvwm", alas.

Sorry for being unclear,

oh! now I get it.

both gnome and kde have their own support for anti-aliasing, I don't know exactly how it works but it's not part of standard X fonts services (i.e. only apps that use kde or gnome can use antialiased fonts, there might be more limitations to that).
