I constructed a module a while back that had tabbing as well as other things, but it never really got stable enough where I proposed anyone use it except as a prototype. The ion-like pane capability is probably not worth the complexity, so I'm considering a simplified non-paning rewrite that concentrates on just the tabbing. Paning looks cool, but I never really found a lot of real world use for it in the window manager. For the curious, take a look at http://imonk.com/baboon/FvwmPartition.
