The Firefox issue should be long gone. It has been for me. Dominik tracked down the problem in June of 2005. I have the email if interested. Here is the link to the Gtk patch that fixed the problem: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=46042&action=view I haven't seen any problem with xterm but I use rxvt just about always.
