Some of the stupid apps have a setting you can change in the app itself (I know google-chrome has one), other than that I don't know. I've never been able to find a coherent description of what the heck a "wayland" is, but every time anything specific I can actually see changes for the sake of wayland, it always appears to be a horrible regression :-(.
