It's usually a rather arbitrary line. Afterall a PIX is just i386 (PC)
hardware running a specialized operating system (software). OTOH, a
lot of the logic in Netscreen devices really are in ASIC (hardware).

If you can upgrade the firewall features by loading a new OS, then
it's software. If you need to buy a new device to get the features,
it's hardware. Something like a Cisco router running the Firewall IOS
is a general purpose "routing" device with (perhaps) some specialized
hardware for that purpose, but the firewall features lie in the
software. Which is it?

However, most people when talking about "hardware based" firewalls
probably really mean systems where all of the software, including the OS,
is dedicated to being a firewall (like a PIX) as opposed to systems like
Check Point where software is put on top of a more general-purpose OS.
