I haven't user R55 but R54 has an export tool which allows you to export all your configs from your installation on any FP of NG. You can then trash your box and reinstall R54 or R55 from the CD (this will install the latest secureplatform).
I'd say the above is the cleanest way to upgrade and works like a dream... well it has for me on several occasions. I'm kind of planning to pull it from its current location, re-address the outside interface, relicense/upgrade, and then hook up the internal side and tell the gateway to start routing traffic through it. Interested in recommendations, especially if a different order makes sense, or if there are gotchas in the relicense/upgrade process to watch for.
