Hi all,
I hope moderators will forgive me for this post, but I know that folks at
CheckPoint DO read these lists, so I'm trying to achieve the double result
of asking them for an enhancement, and highlighting a situation that's
rather weird, in my opinion at least.
Now, let's talk technical: we all know of poor behaviour of CheckPoint
Security Servers. Lately, even CheckPoint seem to have noticed these
limitations, and released a whole new set of features on which they called
their new Feature Pack "Application Intelligence". So, I think it's rather
odd they didn't even TRY to solve a bug that's out there at least since 4.0
days.
The issue is that outgoing mail would get stuck in the spooler and log
messages like "Connection to Final_MTA failed"; keep retrying until they
expire, then return an undeliverable, just as the recipient's server didn't
respond.
Well, I'm quite sure this is a bug in SMTP Security Services. The only way
around this I've found till now is to disable SMTP resource and let e-mail
out by SMTP protocol, without any Layer 7 (Application... intelligence?)
control.
So, why don't they simply spend some time investigating such issues, instead
of losing time in changing product names to something hard to understand
(First time Smart...something appeared, I had a hard time looking for log
viewer, that became SmartView Tracker)? I think there's a point to which
customers could ask for functionalities they are paying for, and they
usually pay thousand $ for a firewall that's supposed to be able to inspect
SMTP e-mail at application layer.
I had to explain a customer that they can't reliably use that "feature" they
paid for, because CheckPoint didn't fix it yet since (at least) 1999... I'm
not sure they would buy another CheckPoint now...
End of rant mode. I really hope that all you gurus can share my ideas, and
maybe we all can convince CheckPoint to fix the problem one time for all.
Thanks again
