Gary,

eSafe is a good product, offering good value for money and a high level
of security and spam protection that goes well beyond the average
'keyword matching' technologies in many other products. The suitability
of the product does however depend on what you are trying to achieve.
Currently the largest weakness of the product is it's relatively weak
reporting and policy management features (If you have lots of users or
departments with different requirements it may not be ideal). I have to
admit I'm not a huge fan of the CVP technology, though we have and do
deploy this configuration for clients. I would typically deploy eSafe
SMTP as a secure mail server in a DMZ. I can't remember off the top of
my head but I think the CVP implementation may have a few constraints
for SMTP features that the dedicated eSafe SMTP deployment does not have
(this certainly used to be the case). If you want to do content
filtering for other traffic (HTTP, FTP, Instant Messenger client, P2P
software, URL filtering and I believe POP3 may be being added) etc...
then the eSafe product has strong capabilities in this area and should
ideally be deployed on a second device. Once again I have to caveat
this with the below average reporting and policy capabilities.

In terms of performance it is good (vastly better than WebSweeper which
is slow...). The security is second to none with a great deal of
pro-active technologies for blocking malicious code before virus
definitions are even released. The product can be deployed in different
configurations - CVP, Bridge, Router, Proxy and dedicated secure SMTP
server.

When v5 of the product is released towards the end of this year the
management will improve with integration with LDAP and/or Active
Directory. They are also introducing an improved spam reporting
feature which will apparently allow users to receive a summarised report
of all blocked spam and then request to release individual items if
desired.

Overall it is a good product that provides very good protection tackling
a broad range of security problems. If you want in-depth policy
management and rich reporting however you will struggle until v5 is
released at which point I'm hopeful this area will improve also.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
John

Subject: [FW-1] eSafe with NG

Does anybody use eSafe by Alladin software, it has been reccommended as
a good anti spam solution for my DMZ, but i wanted to hear it from other
NG admins, how does it integrate with NG ? , what are the HTTP Proxy ,
anti virus and content filtering programs like, are they effective ?.
Have any of you experienced issues with this product, how much does it
cost ?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Gary
