Have you used any of the ClusterXL troubleshooting commands? For example, 'cphaprob state' will show the cluster primary/backup state. Check it before, during, and after you shutdown the note. See if it looks different before you shutdown the node, compared to when you bring it up.
If nothing is obvious, try 'cphaprob syncstat' for advanced sync troubleshooting. Things to look for include dropped, old, or late sync messages. These indicate a problem with the sync network, or too much sync traffic.
