Very odd. i got this precise error today as well. I had taken the management
station from HFA08 to HFA11 a wek ago and needed to do a cpstop/cpstart and
that's when it occurred. It did restart from smsstart but I never had this
happen on HFA08 on Windows 2000.

You need to start the sms service. On your SmartCenter, go to
C:\windows\fw1\R55\bin and run smsstart.bat
In Windows Task Manager you should see the sms service running.
Try a cpstop and cpstart to make sure that the cpWatchDog start the sms
service.
Try connecting with your Edge now!

Joe,

Did you get this issue resolved? I'm running into the same problem on

FW-1 4.1 Backward Compatibility is installed.
The Windows event logs shows: cpWatchDog: [error] SMS failed to start

Tried manually start sms service (smsstart) locally with no error returned
(in command prompt) but does not start.

I have opened a ticket with Check Point support, I just thought someone
else
had the same problem and knew how to fix it.

What's the event log say? Is FW-1 4.1 Backward Compatibility installed on that box? It's currently required for Edge management because the Edge firmware is part 4.1 and part NG.
