As an alternative, you might want to consider scaling your mail server more appropriately. There are virus scanning packages that do not cause much overhead. You don't mention what platform or email server application you run, or what is causing the "pressure", but most servers these days scale pretty well, and upgrading your mail platform may be a worthwhile consideration.
