Hi Robert,

I'm not sure of your definition of an appliance, but we're running Windows
2000 Server on a 400 MHz five-year-old desktop with 256 MB of RAM and
mirrored drives. The gateway is Symantec's Mail Security for SMTP gateways
v4.0 which runs as an application on the box. It doesn't do anything else.

Our inbound email MX record points to the gateway which relays it back to
our Exchange servers. It does attachment blocking, opens compressed
attachments (yes, including .RAR), etc. If an attachment is infected and
identified as a mass-mailing worm (designated by Symantec as having "@m" in
their name for the virus), it just drops the message completely.

It also has spam filtering built-in and the spam definitions get updated
periodically by LiveUpdate. For virus defs, LiveUpdate runs once an hour.

We have just about 1,500 users behind it and have been receiving about
28,000 inbound emails a day. It doesn't break a sweat and there is no
noticeable latency in processing a message. I've been using the product
since it was version 2.1 (almost four years now).

I've go two of them set up, the second one with a higher priority MX record,
for failover.

Ray
